In recent years, the global payments market has been undergoing a rapid transformation. New technological solutions, shifts in consumer behavior, and evolving regulatory frameworks are changing the way customers make payments and how merchants conduct their business. Trends such as real-time payments, super-apps, and the Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) model are already shaping the habits of millions around the world. The question remains how quickly and in what form these trends will take root in our region.
Real-Time Payments – Speed as the New Standard
Real-time payments allow funds to be transferred instantly from one account to another, eliminating the wait for settlement. In many countries across Western and Central Europe, and beyond, this type of payment has already become an everyday norm. In our region, however, it is still being introduced through instant payment systems offered by banks.
The benefits for both merchants and customers are clear: faster order confirmation, increased trust, and potentially lower transaction costs. However, there are challenges as well. These include the need to integrate existing payment service providers within the eCommerce channel with banks, and the slow adoption among users who are accustomed to card payments as the dominant method.
Super-Apps – Everything in One Place
Super-apps like WeChat and Alipay in Asia have redefined the way people live, combining shopping, communication, and payments all within a single application. In Southeast Europe, while true super-apps do not yet exist, the use of mobile banking, digital wallets, and telecom apps is growing. These apps already blend bill payments, shopping, and additional services into one platform.
This trend creates an opportunity for local fintech companies and banks to develop integrated solutions. The challenge, however, lies in creating an app that offers users enough value to encourage them to switch to one centralized interface.
Buy Now, Pay Later and Installment Card Payments – Similarities and Differences
The Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) model allows customers to take possession of a product immediately and pay for it over several installments. Globally, this trend is especially popular among younger consumers who seek flexibility and simplicity without relying on credit cards.
In our region, an alternative to BNPL already exists in the form of installment payments via credit cards. There are important differences between the two models:
- With installment card payments, the cost of the installments is typically borne by the merchant through higher acceptance fees, while the customer does not face additional charges.
- In global BNPL models, fees are often shared between the service provider and the merchant, and the terms for customers can vary widely — from zero interest to potential extra costs if payments are delayed.
Installment card payments are already deeply rooted in the region, and customers see them as a standard option. In contrast, the BNPL model still needs to educate users about its benefits and how it differs from traditional methods.
For merchants, the card installment model is familiar and predictable. However, BNPL could introduce new financing options and attract customer segments that have not previously used credit cards.
Opportunities and Challenges for the Region
All of these trends point clearly in one direction: customers want faster, simpler, and more flexible payment solutions. In Southeast Europe, this presents an opportunity for merchants and fintech companies to increase their competitiveness, reduce the number of abandoned shopping carts, and enhance the overall customer experience.
However, challenges remain. Regulatory frameworks often lag behind global trends, technical integrations require investment, and consumer habits change slowly. The key to success will be gradual user education, collaboration between banks, the fintech sector, and merchants, as well as investing in secure and scalable solutions. Those who recognize global trends early and adapt them successfully to the region’s specific needs will have a clear advantage in a market that is just beginning a new phase of digital transformation.
