Social engineering is nothing more than emotional manipulation \u2013 and it targets our most basic human instincts. Once you learn to recognise these triggers, scammers lose their power. Here are the six most common manipulation tactics they use:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>URGENCY<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour account will expire in 15 minutes!\u201d, \u201cThis offer is valid today only!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Goal: force you to act immediately, without thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>FEAR<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSomeone has accessed your account without authorisation!\u201d, \u201cWe detected suspicious activity!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fear pushes us into rushed decisions \u2013 anything to protect ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>AUTHORITY<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe CEO is requesting an urgent payment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we believe a request comes from an authority figure, like a manager, a bank, or a tax office, we are far less likely to question it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>GREED<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCongratulations, you\u2019ve won an iPhone!\u201d, \u201cYou\u2019re eligible for a tax refund!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who doesn\u2019t like free stuff? If it seems unrealistically good, it\u2019s almost certainly a scam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>CURIOSITY<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSee who mentioned you in their video!\u201d, \u201cHere are the photos from last night\u2019s party.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Curiosity is a powerful click-trigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"6\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>THE DESIRE TO HELP<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHi, I\u2019m a new colleague and I can\u2019t log in \u2014 could you please share the Wi-Fi password?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attackers exploit our kindness and willingness to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a message triggers a strong emotion, that\u2019s your warning sign. Emotion is the scammer\u2019s most powerful weapon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Anatomy of a Scam: Six Red Flags Found in Almost Every Phishing Email<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that you understand the psychology behind scams, it is time to get practical. Whether they are pretending to be your bank, a delivery service, or your internal IT team, phishing emails usually share the same mistakes. For example, microsft.com instead of microsoft.com, or <a href=\"mailto:no-reply@company-mail.com\">no-reply@company-mail.com<\/a> instead of @company.com. At first glance, the sender\u2019s email address may look legitimate. But if something feels even slightly off, take a closer look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>UNEXPECTED ATTACHMENT<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be extremely cautious with attachments you didn\u2019t ask for \u2014 especially .zip, .exe, or .docm files. If you are not expecting an invoice or a document, don\u2019t open it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>GENERIC GREETING<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDear user,\u201d or \u201cDear customer,\u201d usually means the message was sent in bulk. Your bank and reputable companies know your name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>SUSPICIOUS LINKS<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The golden rule: NEVER click on a link without checking it first. Hover your mouse over the link (without clicking) and look at the URL that appears in the corner of your browser \u2013 that is the real destination. If the address looks strange, don\u2019t click.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>PANIC-INDUCING LANGUAGE AND POOR GRAMMAR<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If an email threatens you, creates urgency, pushes you toward illogical actions, or contains odd phrasing, grammar mistakes, or spelling errors \u2013 be highly suspicious. These are classic manipulation techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"6\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>UNUSUAL REQUESTS<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If someone asks you to do something you don\u2019t normally do, like make an urgent payment or share a password \u2013 it is almost certainly a scam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Your Superpower in Three Simple Steps<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Okay, you now know how to spot the traps and tricks. What\u2019s next?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your defence plan is simple and built around three steps. Remember this formula: STOP \u2013 CHECK \u2013 REPORT!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>STOP!<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The moment you feel pressure, fear, or any strong emotion \u2013 stop. Don\u2019t take action. Take a deep breath and think. A scammer\u2019s greatest enemy is your 10 seconds of rational thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>CHECK!<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recall the red flags. Check the sender. Check the link. If you are unsure, verify through a different channel: if \u201cthe CEO\u201d requests an urgent payment \u2013 call them, if \u201cyour bank\u201d warns you about a problem \u2013 hang up and call the bank\u2019s official number yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>REPORT!<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spotted a phishing email? Great. Don\u2019t just delete it \u2013 report it. Forward the message to your IT department. By doing so, you are not only protecting yourself, but also helping protect your colleagues. Your IT team can block the sender or link across the entire company. It is far better to report ten false alarms than to miss one real threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Digital security isn\u2019t just an IT responsibility. It\u2019s everyone\u2019s responsibility \u2013 and a skill we can and should all master.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you learn to recognise manipulation tactics, you are no longer the weakest link.
