In recent years, super apps have redefined the way users live and interact across Asia. Platforms like WeChat<\/a> and Alipay<\/a> have become much more than payment apps \u2013 they are ecosystems where you can chat with friends, order food, shop for products and services, pay your bills, or even apply for a loan. All in one place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first glance, the concept sounds like a perfect fit for our region as well. Users want simplicity and convenience, while merchants and service providers are looking for channels that encourage loyalty and more frequent engagement. Yet, the development of super apps faces a number of obstacles that continue to slow down their wider adoption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regional Specifics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Smaller markets with a limited user base<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike China or India, the countries of Southeast Europe have a much smaller population. Croatia, Serbia, North Macedonia and other alone cannot generate enough users to make the development of a super app financially viable. The potential could be unlocked only by connecting several markets in the region \u2013 but that comes with its own set of challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Different currencies and regulations<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some countries use the euro, while others have their own local currencies. This means that any regional super app would have to deal with issues like currency conversion, additional banking fees and exchange rate volatility. On top of that, only some of these countries are EU members, which means that fintech services face a patchwork of rules, from consumer and data protection to various regulatory requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Uneven development of the e-commerce market<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While some countries in the region are seeing steady growth in online shopping and digital payments, others are still in earlier stages of market development. There are also differences in digital literacy, logistics infrastructure, and consumer trust in online shopping. All of this makes it harder to build a single product that would perform equally well across all markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between Innovation and Existing Niche Solutions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the biggest challenges for developing super apps in Southeast Europe is the competition from already well-established niche apps and banks. In almost every category, there are already \u201cbest-in-class\u201d solutions, whether it is payments, banking, delivery, or mobile services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Users are accustomed to these apps, they trust them, and have well-formed habits that make it harder for new super apps to gain traction. To stand out, new entrants would need to offer real added value, either by integrating existing services into a seamless user experience, or by introducing innovations that go beyond what current solutions provide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, banks and larger fintech players have a clear advantage: regulatory support, years of experience, and significant resources that allow them to adapt faster and play a stronger role in shaping the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
